Why plan the total
Why the cremation price is only part of the bill
When a family decides a show animal or old milk cow deserves a proper farewell, the quote for cremation is only the start. There may be a vet's farm call, hauling with a winch truck, an urn or chest big enough for the ashes, keepsakes for the kids, a marker in the pasture and maybe a few people gathering at the barn.
Each piece is modest on its own. Together they can surprise you. The planner lists ten fixed lines, from euthanasia and pickup to an urn, stone and farewell, lets you tick what you want and edit the amounts, and keeps a running low-to-high total. Private cremation and an urn start ticked. Our services page explains every route, including the ones that cost far less.
Using the planner
Working through the checklist
- Tick the items you want. Leave out anything that doesn't apply, like euthanasia if the animal has already died.
- Adjust the ranges. Each line starts with a typical low and high. If you have a real quote, type it in.
- Watch the total. It updates as you go and shows the full range.
- Print or copy the summary to share with family or to compare against provider quotes.
The default amounts come from published figures where they exist and are labelled as typical ranges where they don't. Our research page lists every source.

$600-$1,000[1]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
USD 50–1,000+[2]
Personalized pet urns range from about USD 50 to more than USD 1,000.
$0.80/lb[3]
Midpoint horse cremation cost works out to about $0.80 per pound of body weight, versus about $0.14 per pound for rendering pickup and $0.23 per pound for on-farm composting.
Private cremation is the big line and scales with weight, by our estimate at roughly $0.80 per pound[3] at midpoint horse prices. The planner's line starts at $600 to $1,000 for 1,000 lb, the range the equine extension network reports for a horse, and doesn't scale on its own, so raise it for a heavier animal. For a rough cremation figure before you budget, try the cremation cost calculator.
Two lines are easy to forget. If the animal was insured, your insurer may want a vet's report before anything happens to the body, and that visit costs money. And if the ground is frozen or the pasture is flooded, a loader or tractor may be needed just to reach the animal, which a provider will usually add to the pickup charge.
Worked example
Worked example: a 1,100 lb show heifer
A family's show heifer, three years on the circuit and kept as a pet since, dies of bloat at 1,100 lb. The family wants her cremated, a chest for the house, keepsakes for two kids and a stone under the oak where she liked to stand. In the planner they raise the cremation, pickup, urn and stone lines to their quotes, and put the two keepsake urns in the Cremation jewelry line, since there's no second urn line.
| Line | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Pickup with winch, 40 miles | $150 | $300 |
| Private cremation | $660 | $1,100 |
| Cedar chest for most of the ashes | $150 | $400 |
| Two keepsake urns | $50 | $150 |
| Engraved fieldstone | $150 | $500 |
| Total | $1,160 | $2,450 |
By our estimate she should return around 38.5 lb[4] of ashes, so the chest does the heavy lifting and the keepsakes take only a few cubic inches. The urn size calculator confirms the chest size before you order.

Reading the total
What the total tells you, and where to trim
The range shows what a full farewell could cost at the low and high end. If it's more than you want to spend, the usual trims are pickup (bring the animal yourself if you can do it safely), the container (a plain box for ashes you'll scatter) and the stone (a fieldstone from your own land, hand-lettered). Burying the animal instead? Check the rules on our locations pages.
What the planner can't tell you is what's worth it. For some families, spending more on a cremation for a child's show animal is part of how they grieve. For others, burying the animal on the farm and spending on nothing but a stone feels right. Both are good choices. Our page on grief after losing a livestock animal talks about that, and if the conversation gets hard, the free Tufts University pet loss support helpline is one place to talk it through. The reader poll results show which way other farm families lean for a show animal.

Questions people ask
How much does a full memorial for a show steer cost?
For a 1,200 to 1,400 lb steer with private cremation, farm pickup, a chest for the ashes, a couple of keepsakes and a simple stone, many families land somewhere between about $1,200 and $2,800. Cremation is the biggest line. Skipping pickup or using a fieldstone from your own land brings it down.
Does farm insurance cover memorial costs?
Usually not. Livestock mortality insurance, where you have it, typically covers the animal's value, not cremation or memorials, and may require a vet's report or necropsy. Check your policy before disposing of an insured animal, since some insurers want to see the carcass first.
Is a memorial for a show animal worth the money?
Only you can decide. For many families, especially where a child raised and showed the animal, a proper goodbye helps with grief. Others prefer burial on the farm and a simple marker. The planner is there so whatever you choose, you know the cost before you commit.
Can I use the planner for a whole group of animals?
It's built for a single animal's memorial. For several animals at once, especially production losses, the livestock mortality planner is a better fit: it sizes compost piles and burial pits and compares disposal costs across the group.
