Seguin, Texas
Farm, fairground and backyard: the Seguin picture
Equine and livestock cremation for Seguin is usually arranged through providers covering the San Antonio and New Braunfels region. A private cremation for one large animal is a real expense; communal cremation, rendering and on-farm burial where permitted are all cheaper. Get prices in writing, and ask whether collection mileage is charged from their base or from a nearer point.
Summer heat in this part of South Texas is relentless, so a horse, steer or nanny goat lost in July or August needs to be dealt with quickly, ideally the same morning or afternoon. River-bottom land can also flood in spring and fall storms. Many owners find it simpler to talk through options with their large-animal vet while the animal is still well.
Out past Seguin, the nearest collector may be a couple of hours away and the phone signal patchy in the back pastures. That shapes what a sensible plan looks like. Keep key numbers written on paper as well as in your phone, and decide ahead which gate a truck would use and which spot by the road stays firm in wet weather. On big country, a cow that dies far from any track may have to be dealt with where she lies, so know what your rules allow for that case.
Seguin's population is around 41,048, the 90th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. San Antonio, roughly 34 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Seguin run from there.
The closest communities we cover are New Braunfels (13 miles, a larger centre), Cibolo (16 miles) and Schertz (18 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Seguin too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
55.7%[1]
The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.
$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
Since cremation now covers roughly 55.7%[1] of funerals in Texas, the local funeral trade offers both options without fuss, and pet crematories are reasonably easy to find. Large-animal work is another matter. Many providers stop at a set weight, so ask the limit on your first call. A pet pig, a pair of goats or a lamb is often manageable; a mature bull, sow or dairy cow may need a specialist much further away.

Planning around the Seguin calendar
Heat stress causes losses of its own around Seguin in May, June, July, August and September: dairy cows, heavy feedlot cattle and poultry houses are the most vulnerable. A heat wave can turn a routine week into several deaths at once. Before summer, confirm your renderer's surge capacity, stockpile carbon material if you compost, and know where extra carcasses could be held away from water and the herd while you wait.
When August highs near 98°F settle over Seguin, poultry houses and pig barns often show losses first, because birds and pigs shed heat poorly. Check fans and water twice a day during a heat wave, and have lidded bins and a collection plan ready before the forecast turns. Dead birds should come out of the house every day; left in the litter they draw flies and can hide the first signs of disease.

What livestock disposal and cremation cost in Seguin
If you're budgeting for a whole year rather than one animal, think in losses per head. US dairy operations lost about 3.1% of adult cattle in 2015 against 1.8% on beef operations[4], and calf losses ran higher still. Multiply your expected deaths by the per-call or per-pound cost of your usual route in Seguin, then add a cushion for a heat wave or a storm.

The legal side of dead stock in Texas
A useful habit for anyone keeping livestock in Texas: look up the disposal rules once, on a calm day, and write the key numbers on the barn wall. Deadline in hours, minimum burial depth, well setback, and whether composting is allowed for your species. When a loss happens at night or in a storm, you won't be searching for them on a phone.

Ask two questions before anything else in Seguin: how long does Texas give you, and what does it allow? The answer to the first is usually 24-72 hours[6], set by the state agriculture department or animal health board. The answer to the second depends on species and on whether a renderer still serves the area, which is true in only about 50%[7] of states. Composting, burial and cremation cover the rest, within whatever limits the state sets.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Texas level first; our Texas rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Seguin or your HOA adds anything.
Your first moves after finding a dead animal
- If the death was planned, agree the euthanasia time with the vet and book collection straight afterwards.
- Tell the provider how the animal will be put down. Animals euthanized by injection are refused by some renderers, which can leave cremation or composting as the options.
- Let the family say goodbye, above all any child who fed, raised or showed it. Those few quiet minutes in the barn stay with people.
- Have equipment ready: a skid steer or a loader tractor, straps, and an open route through to the trailer.
- Decide on private or communal cremation if cremating, and ask for written confirmation of which it is.
- Plan where the ashes will go. A large animal returns a lot, so many families split them between an urn, keepsakes and the pasture.
Keepsakes, markers and stories from the barn
Around Seguin, the county opens into pecan orchards, cropland and cattle pasture, with horse properties along the roads toward Kingsbury, Marion and McQueeney. A removal crew coming out to a farm here will want specifics: which farm road, how rough the last stretch is, whether there's a cattle guard, and how near the animal a winch-equipped rig can safely pull up.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to San Antonio to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in San Antonio (roughly 34 miles from Seguin) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Seguin?
Usually yes. New Braunfels is about 13 miles away, Cibolo is about 16 miles away and Schertz is about 18 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Seguin climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 98°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[1]. We show it on the Seguin page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
My child's 4-H animal died near Seguin. What now?
First, let your child know it's okay to be upset; a year of daily care is a real bond. Tell the club leader or show officials, who can explain what happens with the project record. Then decide together whether you'd like a private cremation, a burial on the farm where allowed, or a simple pickup. Save the halter, tag and a photo before anyone collects the animal.
How long does it take to get a cow's or steer's ashes back?
It depends on the provider's schedule and distance more than the cremation itself. At a typical burn rate, the burn phase for an 1,100 lb animal takes at least 4.4 hours[8], then the chamber has to cool and the remains are processed and packed. Pickup scheduling, travel and any backlog add days, so ask for the provider's usual timeline and whether you collect the ashes or they deliver them.
