With about 55.7%[1] of people cremated, Texas sits between the burial tradition of older farm country and the cremation habits of the cities. The legal side of dead stock in Texas
The rules in Texas usually leave the choice of route to you, as long as the method is lawful and done in time. What they won't tolerate is a carcass left in a creek, dragged into a woodlot or burned in a heap. If you're short of time or equipment, a paid collection is always a legal fallback, and it's far better than a shortcut that could bring a fine or a neighbor's complaint.

Can meat from an animal that died on the farm be eaten?
No. An animal that died on its own, or was put down with euthanasia drugs, must not go into the food chain or be fed to dogs. Drug residues can poison pets and wildlife, and the cause of death may be a disease. Only animals killed at an inspected processor, or under your local home-kill rules while healthy, are fit to eat. Treat any dead stock as a carcass to dispose of, not as meat.
What paperwork should I keep after a livestock death?
At a minimum: the date, animal ID or ear tag, cause of death if known, the method of disposal and the collector's ticket or invoice. Insurers, auditors and some breed or show records ask for it, and it helps you spot patterns in losses. For contract pickups, make sure every collection comes with a ticket that matches your records.
Why is cremating a large animal so expensive?
Because of time and capacity. An agricultural incinerator may hold a 1,500 lb load[9] (one manufacturer's rating), so a grown steer or cow is usually cremated alone, and at a typical burn rate an 1,100 lb animal needs at least 4.4 hours[10] before cooling. Add fuel, loading equipment and travel to a farm, and the cost per animal is far higher than rendering.
