Rendering, composting or cremation in Mauldin
If the animal mattered as more than a production loss, the first call you make decides whether ashes can come home. Here's how to plan it calmly and in the right order.

Mauldin, South Carolina
How dead-stock and cremation options work in Mauldin
Upstate red clay greases over in a thunderstorm and sets like pottery in drought, and farm tracks south of Mauldin are often single-lane and rutted. When booking recovery for a mare or steer, give the gate clearance, the grade and where the ground stays soft. During summer the clock runs fast, so call right away and cover the body against the sun.
Mauldin itself is all suburbs, but drive south past Fountain Inn toward Fork Shoals and Laurens County and the land changes to round hay bales, beef cattle and fenced horse paddocks. Owners there generally phone a hauler covering the Upstate after a loss, and the wait often depends on mileage and on whether it happens midweek or on a Sunday.
In smaller places like Mauldin, the mixed-practice vet who vaccinates dogs on Monday may be pregnancy-checking heifers on Tuesday, and they often know more about local disposal than anyone. Ask at a routine visit which crematory they'd use for a large animal and whether they can help with loading, rather than on the day of a death. If farm calls are booked days ahead, schedule a planned euthanasia early so the collection can follow on directly.
With roughly 31,465 residents, Mauldin is the 17th-largest of the 29 South Carolina communities we cover.
If you want to compare providers, look at Simpsonville (5 miles), Greenville (7 miles, a larger centre) and Greer (11 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Cremation habits in South Carolina, and what they mean on the farm
With about 56.1%[1] of people cremated, South Carolina sits between the burial tradition of older farm country and the cremation habits of the cities. For livestock owners it's practical rather than cultural: burial is cheap if you have equipment and deep ground, composting is cheap if you have carbon material and time, and cremation costs more but returns ashes and leaves no site behind.
We take the South Carolina rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Mauldin, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Mauldin weather and how fast you need to act
When July highs near 90°F settle over Mauldin, poultry houses and pig barns often show losses first, because birds and pigs shed heat poorly. Check fans and water twice a day during a heat wave, and have lidded bins and a collection plan ready before the forecast turns. Dead birds should come out of the house every day; left in the litter they draw flies and can hide the first signs of disease.
Summer fairs around Mauldin fall in June, July and August, which is when a show steer or lamb is most at risk on a long trailer ride or in a hot wash rack. If one dies at the grounds, ask the show vet whether the animal can be moved to shade or a cooler spot while your family decides. A private cremation is still possible after a hot afternoon, but the provider will want to collect that same day, so make the call early.

Comparing the cost of each route in Mauldin
Sheep, goats and pigs cost less to handle than cattle, but not proportionally less. A renderer may charge the same call-out for a lamb as for a cow, which makes small stock expensive per pound. That's one reason many farms compost calves, lambs, piglets and poultry. For context, the average value lost per dead sheep or lamb in 2019 was about $200 per head[4]. The table shows typical US figures for a large animal.

The legal side of dead stock in South Carolina
A useful habit for anyone keeping livestock in South Carolina: look up the disposal rules once, on a calm day, and write the key numbers on the barn wall. Deadline in hours, minimum burial depth, well setback, and whether composting is allowed for your species. When a loss happens at night or in a storm, you won't be searching for them on a phone.

Ask two questions before anything else in Mauldin: how long does South Carolina give you, and what does it allow? The answer to the first is usually 24-72 hours[6], set by the state agriculture department or animal health board. The answer to the second depends on species and on whether a renderer still serves the area, which is true in only about 50%[7] of states. Composting, burial and cremation cover the rest, within whatever limits the state sets.
The rules that apply across South Carolina (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our South Carolina page. Mauldin may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
Jobs in the right order after a loss near Mauldin
- Tell the show office and the show vet at once. They'll have a procedure and may need to record the death.
- Ask them to hold off on calling their regular contractor to take the animal away, in case a private cremation is what your family wants.
- Call home and decide together, all the more so when the animal was a young person's project.
- Keep the halter, tag, banner and exhibitor card, and photograph the pen card before the stall is cleared.
- Arrange transport: the crematory can pick up at the showgrounds, or, if the organizers agree, you can haul the animal there yourself in your trailer.
- Talk to the club leader or ag teacher about the project record, so the young person's year of work still counts.
Marking the loss, on the farm or in town
Horse and cattle owners south of Mauldin find that a solo cremation for something so heavy runs high and can involve a long trip. Plenty agree to removal and save a single memento instead: a cleaned leather halter on a hook in the den, a snapshot from a county 4-H show, a braided forelock mounted in a shadow frame. Compare itemized quotes before deciding.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Mauldin?
Usually yes. Simpsonville is about 5 miles away, Greenville is about 7 miles away and Greer is about 11 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in South Carolina?
For people, yes: about 56.1%[1] of South Carolina deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Mauldin follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Does the Mauldin climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 90°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How much ash comes back from a cow or steer?
Cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of body weight[3], so a 1,200 lb steer may return 35 to 60 lb, much more than a standard urn holds. Families often split the ashes between a main urn, a few keepsakes and a scattering in the pasture. The urn size calculator can help you work out what container you'll need.
Why is cremating a large animal so expensive?
Because of time and capacity. An agricultural incinerator may hold a 1,500 lb load[8] (one manufacturer's rating), so a grown steer or cow is usually cremated alone, and at a typical burn rate an 1,100 lb animal needs at least 4.4 hours[9] before cooling. Add fuel, loading equipment and travel to a farm, and the cost per animal is far higher than rendering.
Can I bring a dead animal to a crematory myself?
Often yes, and it can save the pickup fee. You'll need a trailer and a way to load and unload the animal safely, usually a winch, a loader or a skid steer. Call ahead so the provider has equipment and staff ready, and cover the animal in transit. Some regions restrict moving carcasses during disease outbreaks, so check first.
