Novi, Michigan
Livestock losses around Novi: who's affected and how
The rolling, lake-dotted land around Novi can make moving a large animal tricky. Soggy spring ground, narrow gravel roads and steep driveways all complicate a collection. Warn the removal service about any of these before they set out, and ask a neighbor or the stable manager to open gates and guide the truck in, especially if it arrives after dark.
Novi has filled in quickly, but the land west and north of it, toward Wixom, Milford, South Lyon and Lyon Township, still holds horse farms, boarding stables and hobby acreage where people keep goats, sheep or a few alpacas. Removal services covering western Oakland and Livingston counties reach those properties regularly. Ask for one total that includes the trip, the handling and the cremation or rendering fee.
In ranch country around Novi, a carcass left out in the pasture does more than smell. It feeds coyotes, stray dogs and ravens, and it teaches them to hang around the herd, which puts newborn calves and lambs at risk. Prompt removal is one of the simplest nonlethal ways to keep predators away from young stock. If you can't get a dead animal collected quickly, at least drag it well away from the calving or lambing ground and cover it.
Novi's population is around 67,319, the 17th-largest of the 63 Michigan communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Novi are based about 25 miles away in Detroit, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
If you want to compare providers, look at Farmington Hills (6 miles), Livonia (8 miles) and Southfield (12 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

How Michigan thinks about cremation
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Michigan, at about 69.5%[1], but burial is far from gone. That mix shows up in how local farm families think about a show steer or an old milk cow. Neither choice is more proper than the other. What matters is whether the site, the season and the rules support burial, and whether anyone in the family wants to keep something.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Michigan figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Novi tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Seasonal risks for stock and carcass handling near Novi
Moving a frozen carcass is a different job from moving a fresh one. Legs lock at awkward angles, the animal may be stuck to bedding or ice, and a winch cable can slip. Around Novi, work in daylight, slide a sled or a sheet of plywood under the animal if you have one, and never stand in line with a tensioned chain. Ask the renderer or crematory whether they need a frozen animal to thaw before they take it.
In a Novi winter, a storm can cause several losses at once. Check your renderer's policy on frozen carcasses and after-storm backlogs, and ask your extension office whether temporary holding is allowed while you wait. Keeping carcasses covered and away from the herd matters even in the cold, because dogs, coyotes and birds will still find them.

How much to budget for a large animal in Novi
If you're budgeting for a whole year rather than one animal, think in losses per head. US dairy operations lost about 3.1% of adult cattle in 2015 against 1.8% on beef operations[4], and calf losses ran higher still. Multiply your expected deaths by the per-call or per-pound cost of your usual route in Novi, then add a cushion for a heat wave or a storm.

Deadlines, setbacks and approved routes in Michigan
A useful habit for anyone keeping livestock in Michigan: look up the disposal rules once, on a calm day, and write the key numbers on the barn wall. Deadline in hours, minimum burial depth, well setback, and whether composting is allowed for your species. When a loss happens at night or in a storm, you won't be searching for them on a phone.
Not sure which office covers Novi? The Michigan local government directory is the official list.
US carcass rules are a patchwork. A state's board of animal health or agriculture department sets the clock, usually 24-72 hours[6], and decides which methods it allows for which species. Rendering pickup survives in only about 50%[7] of states, so plenty of Michigan farms lean on on-site composting or burial instead. The county extension office knows the local version of the rules better than any website.
For Michigan's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Michigan guide. Local rules in Novi can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Step by step after a death on the farm
- Stop and look before anyone moves the animal. If it died without warning, if more than one is down, or if you see a nosebleed or strange nervous-system signs, ring the vet before you touch anything. Samples for a lab could be needed.
- Move it away from water and the herd with a loader or winch, but only where that can be done without risk. Creek banks and the area around the well head are places to avoid.
- Cover it with a tarp weighted at the edges to keep birds, dogs and coyotes off, especially if the animal was euthanized with drugs.
- Decide whether anyone wants ashes back. If so, find a crematory able to take the weight and speak to them before booking any dead-stock collection.
- Choose the route: renderer, compost pile, burial, landfill or crematory, based on what's legal and available this week.
- Get the price in writing, with the mileage, the loader and any extra for a weekend call-out all shown.
- Keep a record of when it happened, which animal and how it was handled, for the herd book or an insurer.
Ways to honor an animal that earned its place
Owners of horses, llamas, pigs and other heavy animals near Novi typically pick between an individual cremation, a shared one, and rendering. Some keep only a small portion of ashes, a braid of mane, or a horseshoe as a keepsake. Ask each provider when the ashes will be ready and in what kind of container, because the amount from a large animal can fill several boxes.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Detroit to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Detroit (roughly 25 miles from Novi) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the Novi page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 69.5%[1] of Michigan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Novi?
Usually yes. Farmington Hills is about 6 miles away, Livonia is about 8 miles away and Southfield is about 12 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Novi?
January, February, March, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 84°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
What's the difference between incineration and cremation?
They use the same basic equipment. Cremation usually means one animal handled so its own remains can be returned, while incineration is disposal, often several animals at once, with nothing returned. If you want the ashes back, ask for private or individual cremation specifically and get that in writing, including how the animal is identified.
Does composting work in a Novi winter?
It can, if the pile is big enough, built on a thick base and already hot before the deep cold arrives. A heating pile keeps working as you add carcasses; starting one in midwinter is hard. Stockpile wood chips, sawdust or bedding in autumn so there's cover ready, and site the pile where snowmelt won't run into water.
