St. Augustine, Florida
Farm, fairground and backyard: the St. Augustine picture
West of the Intracoastal, St. Johns County changes character around Hastings and Elkton, where potato and cabbage fields share the flat land with cattle, horse barns and family acreage. Crews heading out there appreciate specifics: is the animal under a roof or out in a field, how far is it from pavement, and has rain turned the farm lane to soup? A quick photo of the entrance makes planning easier.
Farming families around Hastings and Elkton often view a large animal's death practically, while hobby farmers and horse owners closer to St. Augustine often ask for individual cremation and something to hold. Both are fair choices. Anything you would like kept, from forelock hair to a worn shoe, must be requested before the animal leaves. Get private cremation priced on paper so there are no surprises.
In ranch country around St. Augustine, a carcass left out in the pasture does more than smell. It feeds coyotes, stray dogs and ravens, and it teaches them to hang around the herd, which puts newborn calves and lambs at risk. Prompt removal is one of the simplest nonlethal ways to keep predators away from young stock. If you can't get a dead animal collected quickly, at least drag it well away from the calving or lambing ground and cover it.
St. Augustine is home to about 16,141 people, the 138th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve St. Augustine are based about 37 miles away in Jacksonville, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Green Cove Springs (23 miles), Ponte Vedra Beach (24 miles) and Palm Coast (25 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
72.5%[1]
The NFDA projected Florida's cremation rate at 72.5% for 2024.
$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are Embrace Pet Insurance and Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension).

Burial, cremation and farm tradition in Florida
About 72.5%[1] of people in Florida are cremated, and that habit has quietly reshaped expectations for animals too. More show families now ask for ashes back, and more hobby farmers choose cremation for an old ewe or a goat that was really a pet. On commercial farms, cremation and incineration are more often chosen for disease control or because no renderer comes anymore, not for sentiment.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Florida figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in St. Augustine tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
What the seasons mean for dead stock in St. Augustine
Wherever you farm near St. Augustine, think about weather in terms of the carcass, the ground and the road. Heat shortens how long a body can wait; frost or flooding decides whether you can dig; and mud, snow or washouts decide whether a truck can reach you. Check all three before you promise anyone a pickup time.

Where the money goes when stock die near St. Augustine
For one large animal, the gap between routes is wide. By our estimate, composting instead of cremating saves roughly $525[4] at midpoint prices for an animal the size of a horse, which is close to a mature cow. That doesn't make composting right for a show steer the family wants back, but for routine losses around St. Augustine it's a real saving. USDA's disposal methods handout explains the cover material and pile temperatures involved.

Burial, composting and deadlines in Florida
Record-keeping rules in Florida may apply alongside disposal rules. Cattle, sheep, goats and pigs often carry official IDs, and a death may need to be reported to a traceability system or noted in a herd register within a set time. Keep the tag number, date and route for every animal. It's the same information an insurer or auditor would ask for, and it takes a minute to jot down in the barn.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in St. Augustine.
There is no national rule for a dead animal on a US farm; each state's agriculture department or board of animal health writes its own. The common thread is a deadline, typically 24-72 hours[6], and a shrinking list of places with a renderer, roughly 50%[7] of states. In St. Augustine that means checking early whether a truck still runs, because if it doesn't, the choice narrows to composting, burial where the state permits it, or cremation.
For Florida's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Florida guide. Local rules in St. Augustine can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
The first day after a loss, in order
- Tell the show office and the show vet at once. There'll be a set process, and the death might have to go on their records.
- Ask them to hold off on calling their regular contractor to take the animal away, in case a private cremation is what your family wants.
- Call home and decide together, all the more so when the animal was a young person's project.
- Keep the halter, tag, banner and exhibitor card, and photograph the pen card before the stall is cleared.
- Arrange transport: either the crematory collects from the grounds, or you take the animal in your own trailer with the organizers' permission.
- Talk to the club leader or ag teacher so the project record can be handled in a way that honors the whole year the young person put in.
Remembering a show or family animal
Coastal heat and humidity in St. Johns County mean a horse, goat or cow should be collected within hours in summer. Shade matters, air movement matters, and plastic sheeting only traps heat. Nor'easters and hurricanes can close roads across the county, especially near the marshes, so think ahead during storm season and tape the key phone numbers inside a feed-room cabinet.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[1] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in St. Augustine follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve St. Augustine actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Jacksonville, about 37 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for St. Augustine and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Which nearby towns can I compare with St. Augustine?
The closest communities we cover are Green Cove Springs (about 23 miles), Ponte Vedra Beach (about 24 miles) and Palm Coast (about 25 miles). Providers based in those places often serve St. Augustine too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Who can dig a burial pit near St. Augustine?
Local excavation contractors, neighbors with a backhoe and sometimes the county road crew after a large loss. Mass trenches for large animals typically run 4-8 ft deep[8], so it's a machine job. Ask for an hourly rate plus trip charge, and check the site against depth and water-setback rules before the digger arrives.
What should I do when a lamb or kid dies at birth near St. Augustine?
Remove it from the pen promptly, wearing gloves, and put it in a lidded bin or somewhere covered and well clear of water until it's collected or composted. Note the dam's ID and anything unusual about the birth. One loss is often just bad luck, but several in a short run, or aborted fetuses, are a reason to call your vet, because some causes of abortion can infect people too.
Can I get my show steer's ashes back?
Yes, if you arrange a private cremation with a provider that can handle large animals. The steer is cremated alone and the ashes are returned, usually in a container you choose. Make that call before any dead-stock pickup is booked, because rendering can't be undone. Save the halter, ear tag and a lock of tail hair first.
