Largo, Florida
Livestock losses around Largo: who's affected and how
Pinellas County is almost fully built out, and Largo has very few horses or livestock. Owners of large animals in this part of the Tampa Bay area generally keep them in Pasco County to the north or in rural Hillsborough to the east. For a death at one of those properties, give providers the farm's street address, the gate arrangement and the distance from the road to the stall or paddock.
For Largo residents who board a horse or keep a few goats on land outside Pinellas, the realistic paths are a solo cremation with the remains sent back, a group cremation, rendering or, where allowed, burial on the farm. The first is by far the costliest for a big body, and the drive across the bay adds to it. An itemized estimate should show transport, cremation and ash return as distinct figures.
Where no truck comes to Largo anymore, on-farm composting is often the cheapest legal route, if your state or country allows it for that species. A mature cow needs a deep bed and cover of wood chips, sawdust or old bedding, and the pile has to heat up properly. Some neighbors share one well-sited compost area and a loader, which spreads the work and keeps carcasses away from every farm's creek.
With roughly 80,690 residents, Largo is the 39th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Largo are based about 12 miles away in St. Petersburg, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
If you want to compare providers, look at Clearwater (4 miles), Seminole (5 miles) and Pinellas Park (5 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
About 72.5%[1] of people in Florida are cremated, and that habit has quietly reshaped expectations for animals too. More show families now ask for ashes back, and more hobby farmers choose cremation for an old ewe or a goat that was really a pet. On commercial farms, cremation and incineration are more often chosen for disease control or because no renderer comes anymore, not for sentiment.
That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Largo only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
What the seasons mean for dead stock in Largo
In hot weather a compost pile heats fast, which is good, but a poorly covered carcass in August will smell and draw buzzards and dogs. Build the base first, bring enough cover to bury the animal completely, and check the pile after a few days. If you can't get enough wood chips or sawdust in time, a renderer or a landfill that accepts carcasses may be the better choice this time.
Heat stress causes losses of its own around Largo in May, June, July, August, September and October: dairy cows, heavy feedlot cattle and poultry houses are the most vulnerable. A heat wave can turn a routine week into several deaths at once. Before summer, confirm your renderer's surge capacity, stockpile carbon material if you compost, and know where extra carcasses could be held away from water and the herd while you wait.

Where the money goes when stock die near Largo
A private cremation in Largo costs more than every other route because a mature animal fills an agricultural chamber and takes hours, but it's the only one that returns ashes. For a show steer or a family milk cow, most families decide that's worth it. For routine production losses, the cheaper routes make more sense. Whichever you choose, get the total in writing, including pickup, loading and fuel surcharges.

Rules worth knowing in Florida
Rules in Florida can also limit where a carcass travels. During a disease outbreak, movement controls may stop animals or carcasses leaving the farm, and some areas prescribe the method for specific diseases. If a quarantine or control zone has been declared nearby, check before calling any collector or crematory, and keep the animal covered and apart from the herd until you're told how to proceed.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
In the US, dead-stock rules are set state by state, usually by the agriculture department or board of animal health. Most states expect disposal within 24-72 hours[5], and only about 50%[6] of states still have a rendering plant. Where no truck comes, composting and burial fill the gap, but not every state allows both for every species. Your county extension office is the quickest way to find out what applies on your land.
Start with the Florida rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Largo's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
A calm checklist for Largo farms and families
- Stop and look before anyone moves the animal. If it died without warning, if more than one is down, or if you see a nosebleed or strange nervous-system signs, ring the vet before you touch anything. Samples for a lab could be needed.
- Move it away from water and the herd if you can do it safely, using a loader or winch. Keep it off creek banks and well clear of the well head.
- Cover it with a tarp weighted at the edges to keep birds, dogs and coyotes off, especially if the animal was euthanized with drugs.
- Decide whether anyone wants ashes back. If so, find a crematory able to take the weight and speak to them before booking any dead-stock collection.
- Choose the route: renderer, compost pile, burial, landfill or crematory, based on what's legal and available this week.
- Get the price in writing, including mileage, loading equipment and any weekend charge.
- Keep a record of when it happened, which animal and how it was handled, for the herd book or an insurer.
Memorials that fit a working farm
Around Tampa Bay, summer thunderstorms and tropical systems can flood low pastures quickly, and the heat means a large animal's body needs attention within hours. If a horse, goat, pig or cow dies in wet ground, collection may need special equipment. Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to St. Petersburg to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in St. Petersburg (roughly 12 miles from Largo) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[1] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Largo follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Largo?
The closest communities we cover are Clearwater (about 4 miles), Seminole (about 5 miles) and Pinellas Park (about 5 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Largo too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Largo?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 91°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can meat from an animal that died on the farm be eaten?
No. An animal that died on its own, or was put down with euthanasia drugs, must not go into the food chain or be fed to dogs. Drug residues can poison pets and wildlife, and the cause of death may be a disease. Only animals killed at an inspected processor, or under your local home-kill rules while healthy, are fit to eat. Treat any dead stock as a carcass to dispose of, not as meat.
Can I bury a dead cow on my land in Florida?
In most US states, yes, with conditions on depth, soil cover, distance from wells and water, and sometimes how many animals per acre. Pennsylvania, for instance, requires a 100 ft setback[7] from wells, waters and property lines. Check your state's agriculture department before digging, and remember city or county rules can be stricter near Largo.
