When a farm animal dies in Hollywood: your options

Hollywood, Florida

Farm, fairground and backyard: the Hollywood picture

Burying a horse or other large animal is hard in much of Broward County because of the high water table and local rules, so owners usually choose between rendering and individual cremation with ashes returned. Expect horse cremation to cost far more than pet cremation, largely because of the body's size and specialised transport. Ask for a written quote that includes collection from the farm and whether you can be present.

There are few large animals in Hollywood itself, but western Broward is horse country. Davie and Southwest Ranches are full of horse properties, riding trails, small barns and hobby farms with goats and other livestock, all within a short drive. When a large animal dies out there, share the address, the gate width and how close a truck can get, especially if the ground is soft after rain.

Some public landfills around Hollywood accept animal carcasses, usually by appointment and charged by weight, and a few will take whole cattle. Policies differ from site to site and can change after a disease scare, so phone the scale house rather than trusting a web page. Ask about opening hours, notice, how a heavy animal gets unloaded and whether drug-euthanized animals are accepted. Where it works, a landfill is a sensible fallback when no renderer can come.

With roughly 157,019 residents, Hollywood is the 12th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Hollywood are based about 13 miles away in Hialeah, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

For a second opinion on price, Hallandale Beach (2 miles), Dania Beach (3 miles) and Aventura (4 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Hollywood routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

72.5%[1]

The NFDA projected Florida's cremation rate at 72.5% for 2024.

$600-$1,000[2]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

How Florida thinks about cremation

Around 72.5%[1] of the population of Florida is cremated at death, yet on most working farms here only a handful of animals ever get a private cremation. The rest go to rendering, compost or burial as routine. Some families find it helps to agree in advance which animals would be the exception: the old cow who raised a dozen calves, a child's pet goat, the ram everyone knew by name. Settling that on a calm day spares an argument at the barn door.

We take the Florida rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Hollywood, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Hollywood weather and how fast you need to act

Summer highs near 91°F in Hollywood also shorten how long a carcass can wait for a trailer. Many places require disposal within 24-72 hours[4] of death anyway, and in heat you'll want it gone sooner. If the provider can't come the same day, ask whether you can bring the animal to them or to a nearer drop point, and have a loader ready.

Hollywood summers are hot, with August highs averaging around 91°F. A dead cow or steer in that heat bloats within hours, draws flies and scavengers quickly and becomes harder for a renderer to take. Move the carcass into shade if you can do it safely, cover it with a weighted tarp and push for same-day or next-morning collection. If you want a private cremation, tell the provider it's summer so they prioritize the pickup.

Comparing the cost of each route in Hollywood

If you're budgeting for a whole year rather than one animal, think in losses per head. US dairy operations lost about 3.1% of adult cattle in 2015 against 1.8% on beef operations[5], and calf losses ran higher still. Multiply your expected deaths by the per-call or per-pound cost of your usual route in Hollywood, then add a cushion for a heat wave or a storm.

Rules worth knowing in Florida

The rules that matter most for dead stock in Florida usually come from the agriculture department, the animal health board or the environmental agency, and sometimes all three. They apply to a single show steer as much as to a herd. The general aftercare notes below are a starting point; your local extension or agricultural office can confirm what applies to your land and species.

The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Hollywood.

In the US, dead-stock rules are set state by state, usually by the agriculture department or board of animal health. Most states expect disposal within 24-72 hours[4], and only about 50%[7] of states still have a rendering plant. Where no truck comes, composting and burial fill the gap, but not every state allows both for every species. Your county extension office is the quickest way to find out what applies on your land.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Florida level first; our Florida rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Hollywood or your HOA adds anything.

A calm checklist for Hollywood farms and families

  1. Tell the show office and the show vet at once. They'll have a procedure and may need to record the death.
  2. Ask them to hold off on calling their regular contractor to take the animal away, in case a private cremation is what your family wants.
  3. Call home and decide together, especially if a child or teenager raised the animal.
  4. Keep the halter, tag, banner and exhibitor card, and get a photo of the pen card while the stall is still as it was.
  5. Arrange transport: the crematory can pick up at the showgrounds, or, if the organizers agree, you can haul the animal there yourself in your trailer.
  6. Talk to the club leader or ag teacher about the project record, so the young person's year of work still counts.

Marking the loss, on the farm or in town

South Florida's heat makes speed essential when a horse, goat or other large animal dies, and summer rains can leave pastures waterlogged for days. Hurricane season adds another layer, since storms can flood roads and delay collection. If you keep an older large animal in western Broward, plan before storm season, including how a vehicle would reach the animal and a backup if roads close.

Questions people ask

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Hollywood?

There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 91°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hollywood?

Usually yes. Hallandale Beach is about 2 miles away, Dania Beach is about 3 miles away and Aventura is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will I have to travel to Hialeah to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Hialeah (roughly 13 miles from Hollywood) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Is cremation common in Florida?

For people, yes: about 72.5%[1] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Hollywood follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

What's the difference between incineration and cremation?

They use the same basic equipment. Cremation usually means one animal handled so its own remains can be returned, while incineration is disposal, often several animals at once, with nothing returned. If you want the ashes back, ask for private or individual cremation specifically and get that in writing, including how the animal is identified.

What should I do if several animals die at once?

Keep the rest of the herd or flock away, don't move the carcasses off the farm, and call your vet the same day. Sudden multiple deaths can mean a reportable disease, poisoning or heat stress, and the answer changes how disposal must be done. If disease is confirmed, animal health officials usually decide the method and may help with capacity.
