Your local large-animal vet near Christmas is often the best first call when a death is sudden or unexplained. Several animals down at once, bleeding, odd behavior before death or a spike in losses in poultry are reasons to hold the carcass for a vet check before anyone moves it. A lab result can protect the rest of the herd, and some diseases have to be reported before disposal.

Burial, cremation and farm tradition in Florida
With about 72.5%[1] of people cremated, Florida leans heavily toward cremation in human funerals. On the farm, the more useful question is what the local ground and rules allow. Where burial is restricted or composting isn't permitted for cattle and sheep, cremation or incineration may be the only on-your-own-terms option left, and it helps that local attitudes to it are already relaxed.
We take the Florida rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Christmas, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Weather, ground conditions and disposal in Christmas
When July highs near 90°F settle over Christmas, poultry houses and pig barns often show losses first, because birds and pigs shed heat poorly. Check fans and water twice a day during a heat wave, and have lidded bins and a collection plan ready before the forecast turns. Dead birds should come out of the house every day; left in the litter they draw flies and can hide the first signs of disease.

If you want a private cremation, tell the provider it's summer so they prioritize the pickup.

There's little published cost data for cattle alone, so the best benchmarks come from extension studies of 1,000 to 1,200 lb horses, which are the closest match to a mature cow or steer. A rendering pickup was quoted at about $75-$200[4], and cremating a 1,000 lb animal at about $600-$1,000[2]. Record-keeping rules in Florida may apply alongside disposal rules. Cattle, sheep, goats and pigs often carry official IDs, and a death may need to be reported to a traceability system or noted in a herd register within a set time. Keep the tag number, date and route for every animal. It's the same information an insurer or auditor would ask for, and it takes a minute to jot down in the barn.

Do burial rules apply to one show animal the same as a herd?

Local excavation contractors, neighbors with a backhoe and sometimes the county road crew after a large loss. Mass trenches for large animals typically run 4-8 ft deep[8], so it's a machine job.
