Dead stock, show animals and cremation in Alicante
If the animal mattered as more than a production loss, the first call you make decides whether ashes can come home. Here's how to plan it calmly and in the right order.
- Time limits you need to know
- Pickup points that protect your herd
- Keepsakes from halters to ear tags

Livestock losses around Alicante: who's affected and how
Alicante's long hot summers mean a large animal's body must be dealt with quickly. For horses, donkeys and pet goats or sheep, individual cremation with ashes returned may be possible through providers who handle large animals, though they may be some distance away. Working livestock usually goes through the agricultural collection system. Tell us which it was when you get in touch. In summer, same-day arrangements are often needed.
Autumn in the Alicante area can bring sudden, heavy storms, known locally as DANA or gota fría, which can flood roads and fields. If you care for an older horse or retired farm animal on the Costa Blanca, it's worth asking in advance what collection would involve, whether ashes can be returned, and what it costs, so you're not arranging it during bad weather.
Large-animal crematories are far fewer than pet crematories, and the one that serves Alicante may be based in a larger centre such as Alicante or out in the county where there's room for the equipment. That's normal. Ask how they collect a big animal, what the mileage charge is and how long the round trip takes before the ashes come back. A clear answer to all three is a good sign.
Alicante is home to about 334,000 people, the 2nd-largest of the 2 Valencia communities we cover.
Families in Alicante often end up using a provider from Murcia (43 miles) and Valencia (78 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
50.11%[1]
In 2024, cremations overtook burials in Spain for the first time: 50.11% of deaths (218,538 cremations).
$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from Embrace Pet Insurance and Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension), and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

What local funeral habits suggest about farm aftercare
In Spain, about 50.11%[1] of people are cremated. That middle ground means local vets and crematories are used to both kinds of request, and you shouldn't feel awkward asking for a private cremation of a large animal. Just know that capacity is limited: one mature animal can fill a whole agricultural chamber, so providers schedule them one at a time and quote accordingly.
That Spain rate is a human one, published by Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). We quote it for Alicante only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Heat, cold and timing for livestock losses in Alicante
Without detailed weather records for Alicante, the safest approach is to ask two local people: a large-animal vet and whoever collects carcasses nearby. Between them they'll know when the ground freezes, when the heat starts to bite and which months bring the most losses. Write their answers down and plan your year around them.

What livestock disposal and cremation cost in Alicante
We haven't found reliable published livestock disposal prices across Europe, so we don't show invented figures. For budgeting, the relative costs are similar to elsewhere: routine collection is modest, while individual cremation of a large animal costs many times more because it fills a whole chamber. Ask the collector and any crematorium in Alicante for written prices.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Valencia: Valencia costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Deadlines, setbacks and approved routes in Valencia
Most dead-stock regulations in Valencia were written with commercial herds in mind, but they rarely make an exception for a single pet pig or a 4-H lamb. If the animal is a farm species, assume the livestock rules apply unless an official tells you otherwise. The notes below summarize local aftercare guidance; your agricultural or animal health office can confirm the details for your property and species.
What to do when livestock die in Alicante
- Stop and look before anyone moves the animal. Sudden death, several animals down, bleeding from the nose or odd neurological signs are reasons to call a vet first. A lab may want samples.
- Move it away from water and the herd if you can do it safely, using a loader or winch. Keep it off creek banks and well clear of the well head.
- Cover it using a tarp held down at the corners so dogs, coyotes and birds can't get at it. This matters most when euthanasia drugs were used.
- Decide whether anyone wants ashes back. If so, call a crematory that can handle the weight before any dead-stock pickup is booked.
- Choose the route: renderer, compost pile, burial, landfill or crematory, based on what's legal and available this week.
- Get the price in writing, with the mileage, the loader and any extra for a weekend call-out all shown.
- Keep a record of the date, animal ID and method, for your herd records or an insurance claim.
Remembering a show or family animal
Inland from Alicante, the Vinalopó valley and the hills toward the Sierra de Aitana hold olive and almond groves, small farms with goats and sheep, and riding stables. When a large animal dies on a rural property, access on narrow country roads can be the biggest challenge. Share the location, how close a vehicle can get and whether the ground is firm enough for a truck.

Questions people ask
Why does the Alicante page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) reports about 50.11%[1] of Spain residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Alicante?
Usually yes. Murcia is about 43 miles away and Valencia is about 78 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can a crematory collect a large animal from a small property in Alicante?
Often yes, if the truck can reach it. Tell the provider the animal's weight, where it's lying and any tight gates, soft ground or narrow lanes. Large-animal providers usually use a winch or tilt trailer; a skid steer may be needed if the animal is inside a small barn. Expect a mileage charge if the provider is based outside Alicante.
Do I have to report a livestock death?
Sometimes. Cattle, sheep, goats and pigs with official ear tags may need the death logged with a traceability system or on your holding register by a deadline, and sudden deaths with signs of a notifiable disease must be reported to animal health officials before disposal. A routine loss of an old ewe usually just needs a note in your own records. Your vet or agricultural office can tell you what applies.
Is livestock cremation common in Valencia?
For people, about 50.11%[1] of deaths in Spain end in cremation, and local habits shape how families feel about it. For livestock, cremation is still mostly chosen for show animals, family cows and pet pigs or goats, while production losses go to renderers, compost, burial or incineration. Large-animal crematories are specialized, so it's worth finding one before you need it.
Will a regular pet crematory near Alicante take a goat, sheep or pet pig?
Often, if the animal is under the crematory's weight limit. Many pet crematories handle goats, sheep, lambs and smaller pigs individually and return the ashes, while a grown sow, boar or cow usually needs a large-animal provider. Ask the limit on the first call, whether they collect from your property and whether the price includes a container. Tell them the species too, since a few won't take farm animals at all.
