Rules in Basque Country can also limit where a carcass travels. During a disease outbreak, movement controls may stop animals or carcasses leaving the farm, and some areas prescribe the method for specific diseases. If a quarantine or control zone has been declared nearby, check before calling any collector or crematory, and keep the animal covered and apart from the herd until you're told how to proceed.
What to do when livestock die in Bilbao
- Book the vet to come to you where possible. An elderly or unwell goat or pig should not have to be loaded and driven to a clinic, and a farm visit is something most large-animal vets offer.
- Choose the place together: somewhere quiet and level that a vehicle can reach afterwards, with bedding the animal knows.
- Call the crematory before the appointment to ask what weight they accept and if they do collections, then fix a pickup for shortly after the vet leaves.
- Let companions see the body if they seem to want to. Goats and pigs live in groups, and some owners feel it helps the others settle.
- Trim a lock of hair or press a hoof print into clay before the animal leaves.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Bilbao?

Can I keep a pet sheep's or goat's ashes in the EU?
Generally yes, if the animal was cremated individually at a licensed crematorium. Ashes returned to you after an individual cremation can usually be kept at home, and many families bury or scatter them later, subject to local rules. Tell the crematorium the animal was a pet and ask what paperwork it needs to release the body from the farm. Routine fallen-stock collection doesn't return anything.
Can meat from an animal that died on the farm be eaten?
No. An animal that died on its own, or was put down with euthanasia drugs, must not go into the food chain or be fed to dogs. Drug residues can poison pets and wildlife, and the cause of death may be a disease. Only animals killed at an inspected processor, or under your local home-kill rules while healthy, are fit to eat. Treat any dead stock as a carcass to dispose of, not as meat.
