Granada, Andalusia
How dead-stock and cremation options work in Granada
The province of Granada is rural once you leave the city, with olive groves, farms, goats and sheep in the hills, and horses throughout Andalusia, the home region of the Andalusian horse. When a large animal dies on a cortijo or a smallholding, access is the first question. Describe the track, the gate and whether a vehicle can reach the animal, especially on steep or terraced land.
In the villages around Granada and in the Alpujarras, families often keep a horse, a donkey or a few goats for many years, and these animals are much loved. If one of them is growing old, plan ahead. Find out which providers serve your area, what collection from a rural property involves and whether ashes can be returned, so nothing has to be rushed.
In a place this size, most routes can be arranged within a day on a weekday. Weekends and holidays are harder: renderers may not run, and crematories may only take messages. Know your Saturday plan in advance: where a carcass can be moved and covered, who has a tractor with a loader, and who you'd call first. It turns a crisis into a chore.
Granada's population is around 232,000, the 3rd-largest of the 4 Andalusia communities we cover. Malaga, roughly 55 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Granada run from there.
Granada sits within easy reach of Malaga (55 miles, a larger centre), Marbella (85 miles) and Seville (132 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Granada; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
50.11%[1]
In 2024, cremations overtook burials in Spain for the first time: 50.11% of deaths (218,538 cremations).
$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
Since cremation now covers roughly 50.11%[1] of funerals in Spain, the local funeral trade offers both options without fuss, and pet crematories are reasonably easy to find. Large-animal work is another matter. Many providers stop at a set weight, so ask the limit on your first call. A pet pig, a pair of goats or a lamb is often manageable; a mature bull, sow or dairy cow may need a specialist much further away.
Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) is where the Spain figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Granada tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Planning around the Granada calendar
Wherever you are, the same rules of thumb apply: in warm weather, move the carcass to shade, cover it and get it collected within the day; in cold weather you have more time, but frozen ground can make burial impossible. Around Granada, ask a local vet or collector what they recommend for this time of year, because they know the seasons well.

Comparing the cost of each route in Granada
If you want a show animal, a pet pig or a family cow cremated individually with the ashes returned, that is usually arranged through a pet crematorium that can handle large animals, separately from the official fallen-stock collection. Ask whether they collect from the farm in Granada, what they charge by weight and what paperwork is needed to release the animal to them.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Andalusia: Andalusia costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Deadlines, setbacks and approved routes in Andalusia
Dead-stock rules in Andalusia exist mainly to protect water and stop disease. That's why they focus on deadlines, distance from wells and creeks, soil depth above bedrock and the water table, and keeping scavengers off carcasses. If your chosen site can't meet them, a renderer, landfill or crematory is the safer option, and a quick call to your agricultural office settles most doubts.
Step by step after a death on the farm
- Count and separate. If more than one animal has died, keep the rest of the herd or flock away and call your vet the same day.
- Don't move suspect carcasses off the farm when a reportable disease can't be ruled out; wait for instructions on how.
- Check your capacity: is there enough carbon material on hand to compost, does a burial pit fit the rules, and can the renderer cope with that many?
- Call for help early. Your extension office, the neighbors and custom operators may have a loader to lend or can put up a windrow for you.
- Keep biosecurity tight: no collection truck comes past the road, and whoever has touched a carcass swaps boots before they go back among the live stock.
- Write down what happened and what went well, and your next plan will be stronger for it.
Keepsakes, markers and stories from the barn
Summer heat in the Vega and the hills around Granada makes speed essential after a horse, mule or other large animal dies, while winter can bring frost and even snow at altitude, making mountain tracks harder. For commercial livestock there are established collection channels. For a family horse, donkey or pet goat, ask about individual cremation with ashes returned and what it will cost.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Granada?
Usually yes. Malaga is about 55 miles away, Marbella is about 85 miles away and Seville is about 132 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Granada page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) reports about 50.11%[1] of Spain residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Malaga to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Malaga (roughly 55 miles from Granada) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a crematory collect a large animal from a small property in Granada?
Often yes, if the truck can reach it. Tell the provider the animal's weight, where it's lying and any tight gates, soft ground or narrow lanes. Large-animal providers usually use a winch or tilt trailer; a skid steer may be needed if the animal is inside a small barn. Expect a mileage charge if the provider is based outside Granada.
Can I keep a pet sheep's or goat's ashes in the EU?
Generally yes, if the animal was cremated individually at a licensed crematorium. Ashes returned to you after an individual cremation can usually be kept at home, and many families bury or scatter them later, subject to local rules. Tell the crematorium the animal was a pet and ask what paperwork it needs to release the body from the farm. Routine fallen-stock collection doesn't return anything.
Do I have to report a livestock death?
Sometimes. Cattle, sheep, goats and pigs with official ear tags may need the death logged with a traceability system or on your holding register by a deadline, and sudden deaths with signs of a notifiable disease must be reported to animal health officials before disposal. A routine loss of an old ewe usually just needs a note in your own records. Your vet or agricultural office can tell you what applies.
