Rules worth knowing in South Holland
Record-keeping rules in South Holland may apply alongside disposal rules. Cattle, sheep, goats and pigs often carry official IDs, and a death may need to be reported to a traceability system or noted in a herd register within a set time. Keep the tag number, date and route for every animal. It's the same information an insurer or auditor would ask for, and it takes a minute to jot down in the barn.
In the Netherlands, fallen stock is collected by Rendac, the designated rendering company, usually from a collection point or cadaver bin at the edge of the farm. Burying farm animals on the farm isn't allowed. For an individual cremation of a pet pig, goat or sheep with the ashes returned, contact a pet crematorium separately and ask about its weight limit.
Your first moves after finding a dead animal
- Tell the show office and the show vet at once. They'll have a procedure and may need to record the death.
- Ask them to hold off on calling their regular contractor to take the animal away, in case a private cremation is what your family wants.
- Call home and decide together, all the more so when the animal was a young person's project.
- Keep the halter, tag, banner and exhibitor card, and photograph the pen card before the stall is cleared.
- Arrange transport: either the crematory collects from the grounds, or you take the animal in your own trailer with the organizers' permission.
- Talk to the club leader or ag teacher so the project record can be handled in a way that honors the whole year the young person put in.
Ways to honor an animal that earned its place
Polder land stays soft through most seasons, and water-filled ditches line every pasture, so reaching a large animal with a heavy vehicle can be tricky. When you call about collection, describe the access road, the ditches and bridges, and whether a lorry with a crane can reach the stable or field. In summer, move quickly; in winter, frost can actually firm the ground.

Is cremation common in Netherlands?
For people, yes: about 68.37%[1] of Netherlands deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Rotterdam follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Rotterdam?
Usually yes. The Hague is about 13 miles away, Utrecht is about 30 miles away and Haarlem is about 32 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I be there when my animal is cremated?
Some large-animal crematories allow it, especially for show and family animals, but not all have space or the setup for visitors. It may cost more and need booking ahead. If it matters to you, ask on the first call, and ask how long the process takes so you can plan the day; a large animal takes hours.
Will a renderer take an animal that was euthanized with drugs?
Not always. Some renderers refuse drug-euthanized animals because of residues, and since 2003[5] FDA-required labels have warned that such carcasses must be kept away from scavengers. Tell whoever collects exactly how the animal died. If the renderer won't take it, deep burial, composting under full cover, incineration or cremation are the usual alternatives.
What happens to fallen stock near Rotterdam?
In most EU countries fallen stock is collected by an approved service and taken to a processing or incineration plant, under animal by-product rules. On-farm burial is generally not permitted. If you want a show or pet animal cremated individually with the ashes back, arrange that separately with a pet crematorium that handles large animals.
Can I bring a dead animal to a crematory myself?
Often yes, and it can save the pickup fee. You'll need a trailer and a way to load and unload the animal safely, usually a winch, a loader or a skid steer. Call ahead so the provider has equipment and staff ready, and cover the animal in transit. Some regions restrict moving carcasses during disease outbreaks, so check first.
