Tradition, practicality and the animals that mattered
Only about 44.91%[1] of people in France are cremated, so burial remains the local tradition, and many farms still bury stock on their own land. That's a legitimate choice where the ground and rules allow. Cremation is still available for a show or family animal, though you may need to look further afield for a provider that can handle the weight, and plan the pickup a little earlier.

The rules in Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur usually leave the choice of route to you, as long as the method is lawful and done in time. What they won't tolerate is a carcass left in a creek, dragged into a woodlot or burned in a heap. If you're short of time or equipment, a paid collection is always a legal fallback, and it's far better than a shortcut that could bring a fine or a neighbor's complaint.
In France, fallen farm animals are collected by the équarrissage service, which farmers call after a death, and on-farm burial of livestock is generally prohibited. Part of the cost is covered through the sector's collective funding. What to do when livestock die in Cannes
- Take dead newborns out of the pen quickly, so the dam and the other young stock aren't exposed to anything infectious.
- Note the dam's ID, the date and anything unusual: a difficult birth, a weak newborn, scours, a bitter night.
- Hold small carcasses in a lidded bin or a covered spot away from water until collection day or the next compost turn.
- Call your vet if losses climb above your normal, and likewise if you find aborted fetuses. A few of the causes pass to humans, not only to animals.
- Wear gloves to handle afterbirth and aborted fetuses, and wash thoroughly afterwards.
- Log every loss and any pattern across the season will show itself.
Memorials that fit a working farm
Summer on the Côte d'Azur brings wildfire alerts, and hillside stables in the hinterland can have steep, narrow tracks that a lorry struggles to climb. When you ask for help with a horse or other large animal, describe the gradient, the gate width and where a vehicle could turn. If you want a lock of mane or a shoe kept, mention it at once.
