Rules in Ile-de-France can also limit where a carcass travels. During a disease outbreak, movement controls may stop animals or carcasses leaving the farm, and some areas prescribe the method for specific diseases. If a quarantine or control zone has been declared nearby, check before calling any collector or crematory, and keep the animal covered and apart from the herd until you're told how to proceed.
In France, fallen farm animals are collected by the équarrissage service, which farmers call after a death, and on-farm burial of livestock is generally prohibited. Part of the cost is covered through the sector's collective funding. If you want a show animal or a pet pig or goat cremated individually with the ashes returned, contact a pet crematorium (crématorium animalier) that accepts large animals.
The first day after a loss, in order
- Tell the show office and the show vet at once. They'll have a procedure and may need to record the death.
- Ask them to hold off before their usual contractor removes the animal, if your family might want a private cremation.
- Call home and decide together, especially if a child or teenager raised the animal.
- Keep the halter, tag, banner and exhibitor card, and photograph the pen card before the stall is cleared.
- Arrange transport: either the crematory collects from the grounds, or you take the animal in your own trailer with the organizers' permission.
- Talk to the club leader or ag teacher about the project record, so the young person's year of work still counts.
Keeping something of the animal you raised
French law generally forbids burying any animal over 40 kg on private property, which leaves a family horse two routes: the rendering service, or an individual cremation that brings the ashes back to you.
